چکیده

This study experimentally examined the performance consistency of sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) with the same geometry and the same startup protocol. The cells revealed very different characteristics after startup. Doubling the anodic surface area did not enhance the cell performance. Stirring the sediment and aerating the upper water increased voltage output, and the chemical environments (pH and dissolve oxygen concentrations) effectively supported the operation of the studied SMFC. However, individual anodic biofilms and their functions are highly sensitive to extremely small changes in the local environment. The highly inconsistent function of anodic biofilms in SMFCs may hinder their widespread adoption. Copyright © 2015, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Effect of Electrolyte Conductivity and Aeration on Performance of Sediment Microbial Fuel Cell

Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are a promising technology for a viable source of energy. This technology is faced with many challenges, such as limited mass transfer and low electricity generation. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of electrolyte conductivity and aeration effect on power generation from SMFCs. Electrical conductivity was adjusted at 6different levels...

Removal and Changes of Sediment Organic Matter and Electricity Generation by Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells and Amorphous Ferric Hydroxide

Sediments play an important role in determining the quality of lakes, rivers and oceans as they can act as either a source or sink for pollutants. Once the input pollution is controlled, sediments as a secondary source of pollution can release the accumulated pollutants to overlying water.1 The organic matter content of sediments can also affect the structure of macroinvertebrate assemblages.2 ...

Assessment of Sediment Remediation Potential using Microbial Fuel Cell Technology

Bio-electrical responses obtained from freshwater sediments by employing microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology were investigated in this experimental study. During the electricity generation, organic matter in the sediment was microbially oxidized under anaerobic conditions with an electrode serving as a terminal electron acceptor. It was found that the sediment organic matter (SOM) associated w...

Anode materials for sediment microbial fuel cells.

INTRODUCTION Plant microbial fuel cells (P-MFCs), and more general sediment microbial fuel cells, make use of electricigenic metabolism of microorganisms in anoxic soils and sediments. Electricigenic microorganisms are able to respire organic carbon from the soil or sediment with an electrode as final electron acceptor [1]. In this work, the focus is on the anode buried in the sediment, the ele...
